The prayer at the window

Very early in the morning, Gabriel Cortés stood at a window of his house in Palma, read from a small book and raised his eyes to heaven for an hour. A neighbor saw him.

A man praying, standing by an open window
Imagined illustration based on the sources. Not a real portrait.

A witness described what he saw every morning: Gabriel Cortés «very early in the morning would stand at a certain window of his house and, standing, read from a small book», raising his eyes to heaven, «which lasted the space of an hour».

It was very probably the Jewish morning prayer, said standing at the start of the day with a small prayer book in hand. But the witness knew nothing of that. He only saw a man praying in a way that was not the church's way.

What stands out is the place. In a community hiding from maids, neighbors and spies, this man chose the window: he sought the daylight and looked up at the sky, in full view of the street.

We do not know why he took the risk. Perhaps it was the only hour of the day when the house was quiet, or perhaps he no longer wanted to hide.
