In 1679 Moixina was reconciled for the first time. Reconciliation was not a clean pardon: for a time, the reconciled had to wear the penitent's habit, the sambenito, in public, so that everyone would know what they had been.
In his second trial Moixina described a moment from those years. One day, while he was wearing the habit, he was alone on the city quay, «grieving inwardly, begging God for mercy».
He does not say which God. The tribunal understood it for what it was: a man who, though reconciled, still prayed to the God of Israel. For the Inquisition the scene was more proof that his conversion had been feigned.
For us it is something else: a marked man facing the sea across which, years later, his community would try to escape. Moixina never boarded that ship. He was arrested a month before.
