Twenty-five stakes, each with its little seat

The pyre of Palma's second auto-da-fé, 1691: eighty palms square, twenty-five stakes and thousands of spectators. How the Majorcan Inquisition carried out its death sentences.

Imagined illustration based on the sources. Not a real portrait.

The second auto-da-fé, on 1 May 1691, was different. The tribunal handed twenty-one people over to the secular authorities: they were going to die.

A pyre eighty palms square and eight high was built on open ground between the Lazaretto and the slopes of Bellver Castle. On top stood twenty-five stakes, each with a little board. The board was a seat for the garrote: those who repented were strangled before the fire was lit. Those who did not were burned alive.

On 28 April the condemned were told their sentences. Pere Onofre Cortès, «Moixina», was declared an obstinate relapsed heretic and gagged until the sentence was read. In the end he repented: the garrote, then the fire.

The procession covered some two thousand paces from the city and arrived between four and five in the afternoon. Garau counts more than thirty thousand spectators. He also records that Francisca Forteza, as she had promised, said «Jesus» at the last turn of the garrote.
